Delivering Modular Cargo to Remote Construction Project for an International Oil Consortium
Working in a remote, extreme environment in the Russian Far East, Foss helped a major international oil consortium transport 36 prefabricated modules to support construction of an LNG production facility at the northeast tip of Sakhalin Island. Transporting the 280' long x 45' wide x 85' tall modules—which weighed up to 1,800 tons––required complex logistics as well as combating environmental challenges from ice, typhoons and dangerous sea conditions.
From 2005-2006, a team of Foss operations managers, engineers, equipment operators and marine personnel successfully managed the marine transportation, logistics, supply chain management, dredging and heavy haul delivery of two of the largest sealifts in decades, using Foss U.S. flag and foreign flag ocean going tugs and heavy lift barges to transport the modules from Ulsan, South Korea to Sakhalin Island. Three Foss U.S. flag harbor tugs served as shallow water assist tugs to safely navigate the barges over the bar through the narrow channel entrance for set down and discharge in the shallow water basin. The Foss team ballasted the barges onto the bottom and, working in tandem with Mammoet Heavy Haul, completed the final transfer ashore. The project was completed ahead of schedule, on budget, safely and with all materials delivered in good condition.
